Popcorn Pick: The Hunger Games

Jennifer Lawrence shines in this movie bringing toughness and emotion to the heroine Katniss.

Every year in the ruins of North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the nationally televised event - The Hunger Games. The "Tributes" must fight with one another in order to survive.

Katniss (our heroine) is placed against other highly-trained Tributes, most of whom have prepared for these Games their entire lives. She has her own sharp instincts to fall back on but is forced to also rely on the mentorship of drunken former victor, Haymitch Abernathy. To survive and get back home, Katniss is forced to make difficult choices in the arena - survival is pitted against humanity and life against love.

Lawrence, playing Katniss Everdeen, proves to be a strong role model for young girls - displaying themes such as sacrifice, courage and morality in an immoral world. Her will to fight for what's right is commendable and much to revere.

The story is superbly acted out - the film captures the drama, violence and emotion of its source novel.
