Pery Jackson and the lightening thief

Percy Jackson is just the average high school student until one day his Greek Mythology textbook comes to life and Zeus, a powerful god accuses Percy of stealing his lightening bolt!

Percy and his friends embark on a journey to find the real thief and prove Percy's innocence.

This is truly a fun filled adventure that is loaded with lots of action, close-calls and discovery! The story line is perfect if you are looking for a little fantasy and nothing too serious. It's a bit of a 'Harry Potter' with a more mature theme.

We liked it and give this film a rating of 3 out of 5.

In cinemas now.

White Lion is the fascinating story of a young white lion cast out of his pride and forced to make it on his own, with the help of a Shangaan man named Gisani and an older lion Nkulu, the white lion named Letsatsi, grows, learns, fails and triumphs.

The Spy next door

A fun- filled movie about a retired CIA operative who is left to look after his girlfriends kids for one afternoon.

As if that isn’t challenging enough, a twist in the story really gives Bob ho (played by Jackie Chan) a run for his money.

You can expect a lot of action, karate and round house kicks. It is fun, fast- paced and quite hilarious. If you are looking for something light hearted (with not much of a story line) for Saturday afternoon then this movie is the one to see!

We rate this movie 3 out of 5.

Dear John

A beautiful story about a young college girl and a patriotic solider.

They fall in love and make plans for their future but unforeseen events drive them in different directions. The only thing that holds them together are the letters she writes.

A romance that is suitable for anyone who wants to watch something meaningful. The storyline is sweet but typical yet the acting is fantastic.

We love Amanda Seyfried in this one.

We rate this movie 4 out of 5.

The Lovely bones

Lovely bones is a compelling story about a man (and his family) who is determined to find out who killed his daughter.

Through her ‘phantom-help’, she watches them from heaven and gives him clues which lead him on the journey she took the night of her murder.

Starring Susan Sarandon this story is quite engaging and will have you clinging to your seat with anticipation and perhaps even a little anxiety.

If you are looking for something that isn’t mindless but isn’t as serious as a lot of the films on circuit at the moment then see this one. The effects are stunning and the story line is good.

We give this film 3 out of 5.

In cinemas 19 February.

Up in the air

While George Clooney fans will say this movie was excellent, we thought it was forgettable.. definitely not Oscar nomination material (it was nominated by the way.. why? This I can’t tell you).

The story tells of a man whose job it is, to fly around the world firing people on behalf of companies who are unwilling to do their own dirty work.

Clooney is this man, lonely but professional, he cares little for human relationships and places value on... on nothing really.

It’s a hard film, difficult to get into and quite frankly it leaves you feeling grateful that you aren’t him.

If thought provoking melodrama’s are your thing- see it. Otherwise leave it for the die-hard cinema goers.

We rate this film 2 out of 5.

The Wolfman

If you are expecting something similar to Twighlight then you will be sorely disappointed. Image ‘sleepy hollow’ (starring Jonny Depp), Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video and add a strong dose of cheese and that will give you, The Wolfman.

Benicio Del Toro was really scrapping the bottom of the bucket when he chose this one! It’s the classic werewolf story we has all seen and heard before just without good graphics.

The frights are predictable and the lines are lame however if you are easily scared and a huge Antony Hopkins/ Emily Blunt or del Toro fan, then see it!

One thing I can guarantee is, you won’t want it for your dvd collection!

We rate this movie 1 out of 5.

Planet 51

There hasn’t been a more amusing movie release in the last 6 months.

This cute, quirky animation turns the tables on humans for a change and makes them the foreigners in this alien flick!

Based around a young alien boy named Lem, this movie is all about rescuing the human from an evil dictator and crazy scientist!

It’s an absolute, must-see! If you don’t see it, you will be disappointed when you hear everyone talking about it! It definitely gives any animatated movie a run for its money.

Skin

A historical drama based on the life of Sandra Laing (played by Sophie Okonedo), a young girl born to Afrikaans parents but is born with dark skin and curly hair.

This movie follows her life and the struggles she faces as a young women battling against a racist regime.

This movie is so beautifully told and has elements in it that everyone can relate to. It is a must-see!

Skin will give you a better understanding of South African history and why so many South African’s fought for their freedom pre 1994.

We give this movie a rating of 3 out of 5.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

A masterpiece of extraordinary proportion!

This film has too much detail to explain completely but basically centres around, Dr. Parnassus and his amazing 'Imaginarium', a travelling show where members of the audience get a once in a lifetime opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.

This film is based on wagers and has numerous twists and turns. If you are a Heath ledger fan then see this! This film was Heath Ledgers last movie before he died.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, is set to be an absolute classic and a must see for anyone who enjoys fantasy and anyone who wants to escape for a few hours to a place that is truly out of this world.

We give this one a rating of 4 out of 5.
