Tron Legacy (2010)

Tron Legacy is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that would probable be a lot less cool in 2D. Now, 27, Sam Flynn hasn't seen his dad since he was two years old. While looking into his dad's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Yes you guess it, they then have to escape...

A sequel to the 1982 film Tron, the visuals are stunning (they especially look great in 3D) and some have said that the stunt work and action sequences are some of the best of the year ... but the story line is sadly out-dated. While in 1982 he concept of time-travel was still quite new, today you need to do more to get our full attention. Boys, this one is definitely more for you!

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to the magical world of Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Like a true story of Narnia they come across dragons, dwarf camps, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world...

Although the graphics are great and the story line keeps you interested, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader never really gets your pulse racing like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe did. It's a good night out, but we do wish is was more exciting - as any good adventure should be.

Due Date

Hands up who's feeling super-energised and keen for a serious movie at this time of year. Uh-huh. Okay, so maybe I laughed more at this movie than I should have because I'm overtired and burnt out, but that's exactly what I needed to kick-start the holiday.

From Todd Phillips, who brought us The Hangover, comes this holiday comedy that might not go down as a classic but will definitely have you snorting uncontrollably at certain points. As a reminder, Phillips has thrown in the heavily bearded Zack Galifianakis, who brings with him that same ridiculous Hangover humour, as well as the irresistible Robert Downey Jr. The two pair up for a roadtrip of errors when RDJ mistakenly gets placed on the "no fly" list as he's rushing off to be with his wife, who's giving birth. As you can guess, it's mayhem from start to finish. Definitely my movie of the holiday.

Rating: 4 outta 5.

Stoute Boudjies

Think Bakgat and Poena is Koning go "Not Another Teen Movie" before you watch this Afrikaans fliek!

It's simple: sex, drugs and a lot of ridiculous shenanigans that will bring tears to your eyes - just because you can't stop laughing! Follow Hardus's story, a varsity student who is desperate to lose his virginity - and, you guessed it, whatever could go wrong, does.

If this is your cup of tea, it'll have you in stitches! Just remember, you can only watch if you are 16 or over and if you have a handle on your Afrikaans otherwise you're sure to be left behind in the whirlwind of comedy.

Rating: 3 outta 5.

Spud

Even if you have not been lucky enough to read the books, you will still love the film of little Spud as he starts boarding school...

Spud is a South African story and now a South African film, shot right in our own back yard. You get to see some fab young, home-grown talent, in a good movie, which is always awesome to see. The story is funny and was a great choice for a flick: The story follows the story of Spud, a young boy going into boarding school (Michael House in KZN to be exact) for the first time and all his adventures - the good and the bad - that follow.

Go see it. It's a good 4 outta 5 on the rating scale!

Battle for Terra

For once, it's not aliens who are the baddies: this time it's humans invading a planet of cute little aliens!

Yup, you heard right, this animated Sci-fi flick tells a story of how -after clearing the earth of all its resources - humans set off to find another planet when they come across Terra and decide to try and take it over.

This movie comes with a punchy message but in a really cool way. The graphics are awesome and characters funny and really something for everyone.

RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous)

You can tell when actors are having an absolute blast on screen, and it makes you enjoy the movie even more, don't you think? In Red, we're not only treated to some awesome actors (Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich), but their unadulterated enjoyment of the script too. And what a ridiculously fun script it is.

Intentionally silly and cynical, this is one of those films that both stupid and intelligent people can enjoy. The only difference is that the stupid people will actually believe that a well-mannered pensioner could take out some very dangerous men with an automatic weapon. The story is familiar: retired CIA assassins become targets of the very institution they spent years protecting, and must root out the bad eggs in a rogue mission. Essentially the gang gets back together and much craziness ensues. It's a laugh a minute and perfect for escaping reality for a couple hours.

Rating: 4 outta 5.

Unstoppable

I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't like Denzel Washington. Despite being cast mainly in action movies, he doesn't have that irritating action-hero bravado like other stars.

Here he reunites with Man on Fire director Tony Scott in a heart-stopping thriller that will remind you of Speed. Instead of a runaway bus, however, Denzel attempts to stop a runaway train packed with flammable materials. For the younger ladies' benefit, Chris Pine is along with Denzel for the ride, and the two make a funny pair.

I like this film because, like Speed, it's simple: Two guys must stop a train to avoid a national disaster. Because you don't have to struggle to keep up with a complicated storyline you can just focus on the high-speed chase.

Rating: 4 outta 5.

Action Replayy

I bet you never thought you'd see Aishwarya Rai in orange bellbottoms and other 70s-style gear. Well, brace yourselves because this latest Bollywood film takes you back into the age of hippies, primary colours and free love!

Bunty (Aditiya Roy Kapoor) is distressed that his parents' (Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai) marriage was arranged and that the two of them lack the love and passion that love stories are made of. Determined to change this, Bunty finds a time machine and travels back into the 70s to make sure that his parents fall in love - properly this time.

This is a very cute film that will keep you giggling - mainly because of the outrageous outfits that the stars have to wear. I also loved the dance sequences with a touch of flower power.

Giving it a 3 outta 5!

Takers

If you looking for a good “skop, skiet en donner” this is a good bet, unfortunately for us though, even though it stars rapper TI (before he was arrested, imprisoned and then arrested again) and singer Chris Brown (after he was arrested), that’s all it is.

It’s got some awesome action-packed scenes, with things blowing up all over the place and lots of shooting, the cast (made up by some pretty cool characters) works really well together too. It’s definitely for a night when you feel like venting a bit and don’t mind predictable!

Charlie St. Cloud

Yes it is - it's very own singing and dancing hottie, Zac Efron! But this time, he's taking a more serious approach in Charlie St. Cloud, and honestly, I think I like him even more now!

A completely different character, Charlie (Zac) plays a high-school graduate whose life is shattered when his little brother dies. After a while, Charlie is faced with the choice between keeping a promise he made to his brother, who died in a car accident, or going after the girl he loves.

This is a must and a great night out!

Life as We Know It

Katherine Heigl (from “Knocked Up” and “Grey’s Anatomy”) and Josh Duhamel (from “Transformers” and “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!”) play a fiery couple in this movie who, despite not being able to stand each other at first, find themselves having to look after their goddaughter Sophie after her parents -their best friends- die in a tragic accident.

The movie shows the couple going through the good, bad and rather smelly parts of parenthood whilst trying to 'get along' for Sophie's sake. Yes, it's a chick-flick, but you'll be laughing-out-loud and keeping back a tear or two all at the same time. Boys, it might not sound like one for you, but it's a light, feel good movie that we're sure even you will enjoy!

It's a 3 out of 5 for this one!

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Think cartoons are just for kids? You'll definitely change your mind after this one!
Based the books The Guardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn Lasky this movie will give you something different you fall into the world of these adventurous Australian Owls. Believing in the impossible, Soren (a young barn owl), sets out to find a legendary group of warrior owls called The Guardians to save his home from an evil sect who seek to enslave all of owl-kind.

Though the story-line sounds pretty normal, we can promise that the amazing graphics and sinister scenes will have your blood pumping - also available in 3D, you will literally perched on the edge of your seat!

The Other Guys

Jammed with big time stars such as Samuel L Jackson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Keaton and Damon Wayans, you're sure to have a hit on your hands with this flick.

Moving away from the norm of oh-so-serious cop dramas, this takes a refreshing twist as a cop spoof. It takes the age old story of good cops framed by bad cops but it is ridiculous and above all, funny. It will leave you laughing till your sides hurt, but you will be gagging for more.

We give this movie the thumbs up and rate it 4 out of 5!

The Karate Kid

This is one of those remakes that really works. Whether you've seen the original Karate Kid or not, you're going to love this version, which stars Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son) and Jackie Chan.

When Dre (Jaden) is forced to move to China with his mom, he finds himself in a strange country and school, being bullied. Luckily the school janitor Mr Han (Chan) decides to save his bacon one day by showing off some serious kung-fu moves. Desperate to learn kung-fu himself, Dre convinces the old guy to teach him. Will he be able to take on the school bully in a fighting competition? You're going to have to find out!

Somehow this story has not aged and is still really good fun to watch. We loved it. Enjoy!

Resident Evil: Afterlife

If you haven't watched the three Resident Evil movies prior to this one, where have you been? The films are non-stop action with wicked effects and pit man against zombies, otherwise known as the "undead".

In this particular film, the undead have taken over the earth and few humans still exist. Alice, the heroine, must try find fellow survivors and fight for the future of the planet. Prepare yourself for some awesome action! We give this one our stamp of approval.

Salt

In this awesome action-thriller Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who is framed by Russians. This sends her off on the run, and she ends up being chased by the CIA, FBI and the Secret Service! You can imagine how tricky that is... Luckily Salt has some mad skills and is able to outwit her enemies most of the time - and this is where the action comes in. You won't believe some of the situations this woman gets into and out of!

This is a wicked film with non-stop action; we say book your ticket now.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Master sorcerer and magic maker Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is trying to defend Manhattan from the evil Maxim Horvath. When Horvath acquires a sidekick, Blake realises that their powers are far too strong to defeat alone.

Enter Dave, a normal guy who Blake decides is perfect to train up to be his sidekick. Dave’s crash course in sorcery is fraught with disaster, and Blake has some serious doubts about whether he can actually pull this magic thing off. Will he succeed? You’ll have to watch to find out!

This film is filled with awesome special effects that will leave you wide-eyed and open-mouthed, and that alone is worth the price of the ticket. Plus, it looks like a sequel will be made, so make sure you catch the first instalment now.

We think you'll love this movie and give it a 4 out of 5.

I love you Phillip Morris

Played by Jim Carey, 'I love you Phillip Morris' tells the story of Steven Russell a seemingly ordinary man who fits right into the acceptable norm of small town life.

This is until he admits he is gay and going to live his life to the full, even if it means breaking the law! This story is full of adventure, laughter and twists that will have you cringing with embarrassment!

Finally Steven finds his true love,(in a jail of all places) and determines to get him out at all costs!

If you like Jim Carey, you are going to love this film! It is light- hearted and full of typical Carey comedy. In fact parts of the character played by Jim reminded us of Ace Ventura!

We liked this flick and give it a rating of 3 out of 5!

Knight and Day

This is a hysterical comedy about a girl meeting a guy and being taken on the ride of her life!

The two meet on a blind date and while June (Cameron Diaz) doesn't know it yet, Miller played by Tom Cruise is a secret agent who has fallen out of favour with some really bad guys!

These men are out to get Miller and whoever else is with him. June finds herself in a pretty sticky situation and learns to think quick and go with the flow.

This comedy is filled with action and keeps up the pace from start to finish!

We really like it and give it a rating of 4 out of 5!

We recommend this movie and give it a rating of 4 out of 5!

Twilight- Eclipse

Twilight Eclipse! It's the movie we have all been waiting for.

Opening at cinemas countrywide on the 30th June 2010. Book your seats now, or risk being disappointed.

Eclipse is possibly the most exciting movie of the series so far, full of adventure, romance, heart stopping moments and unexpected twists. Edward, Bella and Jacob are about to take us on the journey of our lives!

Dakota Fanning also plays a part in the trilogy and this is Dakota like you have never seen her! Grown up, red eyed and frankly a little scary.

Without giving too much away, Bella's feeling's for Jacob grow stronger, Edward is still spakly and old, dangerous character's resurface.

We absolutely loved Ecplise and would recommend it to 'twihards' and 'non- twihards' alike!

That's why this flick gets a rating of 4 out of 5 from us!

Letters to Juliet

Letters to Juliet is definitely a chick flick...

This story centres around Sophie a young girl who travels to Verona, the home of Shakespeare's fictional leading lady- Juliet (as in Romeo and Juliet). There Sophie joins a group of people who volunteer to respond to letter's written to 'Juliet' about love.

However one letter in particular is especially inspiring for Sophie and after she has responded to it and the family (Grandmother and Grandson) come to Verona as Sophie has suggested in her response, she asks them if she can join them in their adventure.

This completely predictable film leads all three of the travellers to love and restores all lost hope they may have had.

This movie is sweet and nice for a light-hearted afternoon out but it is definitely not award winning and you can wait until it comes out on DVD.

We give this flick a rating of 2 out of 5!

The Killers

Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher are Spencer and Jen the picture perfect couple who fall madly in love and live happily ever after...

The couple are now in for the fight of their lives to stay out of harm's way but they have no idea who it is who is after them!

This movie is full of adventure, and very funny! Kutcher and Heigl make the most hilarious on screen couple and play their parts extremely well.

While it is definitely not an 'Oscar winner' it is good for a bit of light entertainment on the weekend. So if you haven't got any plans for Saturday afternoon, then see this one.

We give this flick a rating of 3 out of 5!

This story is fast moving, thrilling and full of adventure. Time will fly by as you watch it and it's perfect for a Friday night with that special someone or just your friends.

We really enjoyed Prince of Persia, the acting is good, there are a few funny moments and it's not serious at all!

We rate this flick 3 out of 5!

Robin Hood

The classic tale of the forest robber who steals from the rich and gives to the poor comes to the big screen for the second time.

If you are thinking this is just a remake of the first Robin Hood movie, made in the 90's then you are wrong! This time round the directors have taken the Robin Hood story and told it from the time before Robin Hood became this famous 'redistribution of wealth' villain.

We are taken on the journey Robin went through before he became famous, when he served in King Richard's army for 10 years before becoming discontented and finally after being hunted for his life, settles down in the woods with a band of people and starts his well-known escapade!

It is really a beautiful story that is not only well acted, Robin is played by Russell Crow, but it is also a bit of a history lesson told in a very exciting way.

We definitely recommend you see this flick! It is great.

We give this movie a rating of 3 out of 5!

Hot Tub Time Machine

After a night of heavy drinking in a ski resorts hot tub, four friends, including Adam- John Cussack find that when they wake up the next morning, they are back in the year 1986!

Each of the friends is able to go and change things in his past to make his future better! We are taken on four separate yet intertwined journeys that turn out quite differently from the way they did before!

It is an amusing movie, that is quite funny but it isn't anything I would get for the DVD collection! Sadly it seems like John Cussack is grasping at straws with his movie selections! Maybe see this one when it comes out on video.

Can't say we loved it all that much and therefore we give this flick a rating of 2 out of 5!

The perfect comedy about a couple that is trying to put the spark back into their marriage. Through the simple error of mistaken identities, the couple Phil and Claire (Tina Fey and Steve Carrell) are set on a path of hysterical events where they literally must fight for their lives!

How to train your dragon

This delightful movie tells the tale of a young boy- Hiccup who is the son of his tribe’s leader. He is not the sort of boy one would expect to be the son of a great leader but he has other great characteristics- like his eventfulness.

As a rite of passage- Hiccup is expected to slay a dragon but this is simply not in his nature and instead becomes great friends with a dragon he caught and released. While at first this unlikely friendship is frowned upon by the villagers, they soon start to see things his way.

The story line is great, it's suitable for the whole family and is bound to be a classic- to be added to the DVD collection.

It's great for a Saturday afternoon and will have your laughing all the way through.

We highly recommend this one and give it a rating of 4 out of 5!

The Tooth Fairy

A delightful story about a superstar ice hockey player who is tactless and has no problem 'telling it like it is' no matter what the cost or whose feelings he hurts.

Dwayne Johnson, the Rock- plays Derek Thompson the heartless celebrity who because of his selfish ways is made to serve as a tooth fairy's assistant for a full week- this is so he learns his lesson after crushing the dreams of one of his young fans.

The story is hilarious and full of action and adventure. It is more suitable for a younger audience but we are sure you will enjoy it.

Expect plenty of outrageous moments and to laugh from start to finish.

We give this movie a rating of 3 out of 5.

In cinemas now!

Crazy Heart

Crazy Heart is an emotional story about a washed- up old country singer who is still trying to make a living even though he hasn't written a new song in years.

Jeff Bridges- who plays Bad Blake (and won the Oscar for his performance) has a shocking life style of drinking, smoking, late nights and really just hanging out with the wrong sort of people, then he meets someone who turns his life around.

A series of twists and turns take place that put Blake on the right path.

The movie is a bit long winded and may be something more suitable for Mom and Dad but the acting is good, the characters are sincere and a lot of lessons are taught along the way.

If you are looking for something a bit more serious than usual, then see this film.

We give this one a rating of 3 out of 5!

In cinemas now!

Shutter Island

A frightening horror set in the 1950’s. This film is set to knock your socks off and have you clinging to the person next to you.

Shutter Island is a remote island which has an asylum built on it, for the insane. The scene is set with a storm brewing in the background and now Marshal Teddy Daniels, played by Leonard DiCaprio must deal with the inmates/patients who are about to escape.

This film is the ultimate in nail biting, nerve fraying terror. It encapsulates all the emotion and ‘raw-ness’ you would expect from a Martin Scorsese film and DiCaprio’s performance is outstanding.

We rarely do this but we give this film a rating of 4 out of 5!

The book of Eli

The book of Eli, tells the story of a blind man who has made it his mission to protect the last copy of the Bible. Based in the future, Denzel Washington is this man, who takes on the responsibility of safe guarding the book.

This movie is packed with action, sound effects, twists and turns. It is high paced and quite frankly- very violent.

Denzel Washington gives a mediocre preformance but it is by no means an Oscar winning portrayal. To be onest, we thought it was a bit weak!

We give this one a rating of 2 out of 5!

Alice in Wonderland

This movie takes us along with Alice on her second trip down the rabbit hole.

Strangely she does not remember being there before but don’t worry all her old friends remember her. She is reunited with The Mad hatter, the Cheshire cat, the Red queen and many others.

This film is a visionary masterpiece and stars the likes of Jonny Depp.

You can expect to be utterly thrilled by the part 3D classic tale. It is likely to go down as one of Tim Burton’s best films.

The story line is fantastical and in some cases simply boggles the mind!

We absolutely loved it! Loved it!

We rate this film 5 out 5- our higher score ever!

Pery Jackson and the lightening thief

Percy Jackson is just the average high school student until one day his Greek Mythology textbook comes to life and Zeus, a powerful god accuses Percy of stealing his lightening bolt!

Percy and his friends embark on a journey to find the real thief and prove Percy's innocence.

This is truly a fun filled adventure that is loaded with lots of action, close-calls and discovery! The story line is perfect if you are looking for a little fantasy and nothing too serious. It's a bit of a 'Harry Potter' with a more mature theme.

We liked it and give this film a rating of 3 out of 5.

The Spy next door

A fun- filled movie about a retired CIA operative who is left to look after his girlfriends kids for one afternoon.

As if that isn’t challenging enough, a twist in the story really gives Bob ho (played by Jackie Chan) a run for his money.

You can expect a lot of action, karate and round house kicks. It is fun, fast- paced and quite hilarious. If you are looking for something light hearted (with not much of a story line) for Saturday afternoon then this movie is the one to see!

We rate this movie 3 out of 5.

Dear John

A beautiful story about a young college girl and a patriotic solider.

They fall in love and make plans for their future but unforeseen events drive them in different directions. The only thing that holds them together are the letters she writes.

A romance that is suitable for anyone who wants to watch something meaningful. The storyline is sweet but typical yet the acting is fantastic.

We love Amanda Seyfried in this one.

We rate this movie 4 out of 5.

The Lovely bones

Lovely bones is a compelling story about a man (and his family) who is determined to find out who killed his daughter.

Through her ‘phantom-help’, she watches them from heaven and gives him clues which lead him on the journey she took the night of her murder.

Starring Susan Sarandon this story is quite engaging and will have you clinging to your seat with anticipation and perhaps even a little anxiety.

If you are looking for something that isn’t mindless but isn’t as serious as a lot of the films on circuit at the moment then see this one. The effects are stunning and the story line is good.

We give this film 3 out of 5.

In cinemas 19 February.
